Johnny Jewel and Mike Simonetti started Italians Do It Better in 2006 as an electronic-focused outlet for Glass Candy and Chromatics. Despite its name, the label developed in the United States. The 2007 After Dark compilation, Chromatics' Night Drive and Glass Candy's B/E/A/T/B/O/X introduced a shared context for synth-pop, post-punk and disco-derived production.
The catalogue later included Desire, Symmetry, Sally Shapiro and other artists, with the After Dark series providing recurring views of the roster. Chromatics' Kill for Love and Symmetry's Themes for an Imaginary Film show the importance of the album format. Film soundtracks, including Lost River, connect Jewel's recording practice to cinema.
