Perlon was founded in Frankfurt in 1997 by Thomas Franzmann, known as Zip, and Markus Nikolai, and later became based in Berlin. Its catalogue developed around minimal techno and house, with a preference for intricate rhythmic detail, unusual sound placement and extended arrangements. Markus Nikolai's Bushes and the Superlongevity compilations helped bring that approach to a wider audience.
Ricardo Villalobos, Akufen, Baby Ford, Dandy Jack, Pantytec, Thomas Melchior and Fumiya Tanaka are among its contributors. The label has maintained a strong commitment to vinyl, with selected compilations and albums also appearing on CD. Chris Rehberger designed the label's record sleeves. The label also runs the Get Perlonized parties in Berlin.
