Sähkö Recordings was established in Finland in 1993 by Tommi Grönlund with Mika Vainio. Its first release, Röntgen, appeared under Vainio's Ø alias. Early records used reduced electronic means: pulses, silence and carefully placed tones became structural elements rather than decoration. The name is the Finnish word for electricity, and the restrained sleeve designs were closely connected to the music's presentation.
Vainio's Ø and Philus recordings, together with early Panasonic releases, form an important part of the catalogue. Other contributors include Mike Ink, Kirlian and Fred Giannelli. The Puu, Keys of Life and Jazzpuu imprints developed separate routes into house, jazz and related music.
