Australia’s first computer, which in 1951 became the first in the world to play music. Made by ABC Science. 5 min
CSIRAC filled a room the size of a double garage and worked out weather forecasts, building designs and the river flows for the Snowy Mountains hydro-electric scheme. Programmer Geoff Hill also taught it to play melodies such as Colonel Bogey, heard in public for the first time in August 1951.
None of that music was recorded at the time: it was rebuilt decades later at the University of Melbourne from the original punched-paper tapes. CSIRAC is believed to be the only first-generation computer that survives.
