Burial is the recording alias of South London producer William Bevan, whose Hyperdub catalogue reworks UK garage, jungle and rave memory through fragmented rhythm and sampled voices.
Burial is the recording alias of South London producer William Bevan. Hyperdub released South London Boroughs in 2005 and his self-titled debut album in 2006. The music drew on UK garage, two-step and jungle, using irregular rhythms, altered vocal samples and ambient sound. Bevan initially kept his identity private. Untrue followed in 2007, developing the vocal sampling and rhythmic approach of the earlier records.
Later releases often used EPs and long singles rather than conventional albums. The catalogue includes Street Halo, Truant / Rough Sleeper, Rival Dealer, Young Death / Nightmarket and Antidawn. Tunes 2011–2019 collected a decade of solo releases. Burial has collaborated with Four Tet, Thom Yorke and Massive Attack, and contributed production to Jamie Woon’s Mirrorwriting. Hyperdub remains the principal label for his solo catalogue.
