Steve Goodman, better known as Kode9, established Hyperdub as a label in London in 2004 after running a webzine of the same name. Its first years were tied to the emerging dubstep scene, with Kode9 and Burial forming part of the early catalogue. Burial's albums and singles made space for a different treatment of UK club music, built from fragmented voices, atmosphere and rhythm.

Hyperdub subsequently released work by Cooly G, Ikonika, DJ Rashad, Laurel Halo, Fatima Al Qadiri, Jessy Lanza and Loraine James. Chicago footwork, electronic pop and experimental composition entered the catalogue alongside bass-oriented records.
