corto.alto is the project of Glasgow-based composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Liam Shortall. He began releasing music in 2019 through Live from 435, recorded in his bedroom studio with musicians including Fergus McCreadie and Graham Costello. The recordings combine jazz, fusion, hip-hop and electronic production. Not for Now followed in 2021, before Bad with Names in 2023. The debut album received a Mercury Prize nomination.
The 2024 collection 30/108 used sketches selected from Shortall’s hard drive, with each resulting track arranged and completed within a day. He joined Ninja Tune in 2025, releasing Don’t Listen and subsequent singles. Some Small Fortune appeared in 2026. Shortall writes and produces the music while working with different musicians in the studio and on stage.
