Matt Black and Jonathan More, the duo Coldcut, founded Ninja Tune in London in 1990. The project developed from their work with sampling, hip-hop and electronic production into a catalogue that accommodates bands, vocalists, instrumental composers and club producers. Bonobo and The Cinematic Orchestra are part of that history, alongside later releases by Bicep, Floating Points, Actress and Helena Hauff.

Young Fathers, Black Country, New Road and Nilüfer Yanya show the breadth of its recording activity beyond dance music. The associated Big Dada imprint has its own history in hip-hop and was relaunched with a focus on Black and minority ethnic artists and staff. Ninja Tune also works with Brainfeeder and Foreign Family Collective to release, promote and distribute their catalogues.
