Carl Craig founded Planet E Communications in Detroit in 1991 as an independent outlet for his productions.

Carl Craig founded Planet E Communications in Detroit in 1991 as an independent outlet for his productions. The first release was 4 Jazz Funk Classics, recorded under his 69 alias. Craig's Paperclip People and other projects formed the early catalogue before the label expanded to include a wider group of producers.

Releases by Moodymann, Kevin Saunderson, Kenny Larkin, Recloose and Common Factor connect its techno origins to house, jazz and funk. The Community Projects imprint created a further outlet for music outside a conventional club framework. Artist albums, EPs and collaborations document Craig's changing interests and the practices of the musicians around him.
