1959: The Year That Changed Jazz

Four albums from one year, and how they opened jazz up. Made by Paul Bernays and Jez Nelson for BBC Four, 2009. 59 min

In 1959 jazz moved on from the complex bebop of the previous decade towards new forms that gave soloists more freedom. The film tells it through four records made that year: Miles Davis’s Kind of Blue, Dave Brubeck’s Time Out, Charles Mingus’s Mingus Ah Um and Ornette Coleman’s The Shape of Jazz to Come.

With Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, Charles Mingus, Ornette Coleman.
