Flying Lotus founded Brainfeeder in Los Angeles in 2008, after using the name for a Dublab radio broadcast with friends. Early releases connected the city's beat-making community to a label catalogue, including work by Ras G, Samiyam, Daedelus and The Gaslamp Killer. Instrumental hip-hop and electronic production were the starting points for a project that subsequently made more room for jazz and songwriting.

Thundercat, Kamasi Washington, Louis Cole, Genevieve Artadi and Hiatus Kaiyote appear alongside producers such as Lapalux, Teebs and Iglooghost. The catalogue follows both live instrumental practices and detailed electronic construction. A partnership with Ninja Tune, begun in 2010, supports international manufacture, promotion and distribution.
