DFA Records was founded in New York in 2001 by James Murphy, Tim Goldsworthy and Jonathan Galkin. Murphy and Goldsworthy had already worked together as a production team; the label grew from that relationship and their parties. Early singles such as The Rapture's House of Jealous Lovers and The Juan Maclean's By the Time I Get to Venus connected dance music production to bands and post-punk instrumentation.

LCD Soundsystem's albums became a central strand, alongside work by Shit Robot, Holy Ghost!, YACHT and Black Dice. Reissues of Pylon and recordings by Peter Gordon and the Love of Life Orchestra placed the new catalogue in dialogue with earlier experimental dance music.
